He continues this metaphor in the third line by comparing his life to a running race, which shows his final journey: his soul ascending to God. In the sixth line, Mr. Donne uses a symbol by writing sleep.. He uses sleep to mean death, again continuing his metaphor of physical endings to his life. In the seventh and eight lines John Donne uses another dichotomy, when he first states that he is not scared of God, and then contradicts it by saying shakes my every.. Finally, in the twelfth line, John Donne uses a metaphor to explain death as a return to the ground, a final comparison to physical death.

He uses a rhyme scheme of abba abba cdcd ee in this poem, and only one stanza. This is because the poem is a Petrarchan Sonnet. This type of sonnet is very common in his time. He uses the first eight lines to describe the setting of the sonnet, and the last six lines to explain the theme.

Also, the first two quatrains of the sonnet have identical rhyme schemes abba and the sonnet ends with a rhyming couplet ee. Finally, John Donne uses a colon to separate the setting from the theme after line eight, and ends the sonnet with a period after line fourteen. I think that the style John Donne uses in these two poems is similar. He uses paradoxes in both poems, which is very typical of a metaphysical poet. He also uses metaphors in both cases, another metaphysical attribute.

His use of symbols in the two poems is also a constant feature. However, the stanza structure and rhyme scheme differ totally. I think that John Donne s writing style and use of literary techniques between these two poems is quite similar. I found the tone of Song to be relaxed and quite witty.

He uses only one explanation mark, and not very strong language. The mood that comes across to me from the poem is soothing, but also convincing enough that I could imagine his lover to have let him go on his journey. I have this feeling because of all the requests John Donne makes of God. This leaves me with a tense impression of the mood. Also, he uses some powerful imagery like Whose feare already shakes my every.. This relays a tense mood to me. I think that the moods in these two poems are different, and I think that neither truly follows a typical metaphysical mood.

As I expected, John Donne s poetry is different when comparing his early works to those he wrote later in his life. I found evidence to support this by comparing and contrasting the topics and settings, which were completely different. Then I looked at the themes, both being metaphysical, but dissimilar.

Compare And Contrast Two Poems Essay

Donne s stylistic features were examined next and found to be quite similar. Finally, I looked at the tones of the two poems, which I found to be distinct. These two poems are the opposite of one another, when you think of a birthday you think of the birth of something a happy day, but when you remember something it has the possibility of being a happy or upsetting memory.

The two poems 'A Birthday' and 'Remember' are different because 'Remember' is written in a sonnet form and 'A Birthday' is written in one stanza that has sixteen I have chosen to compare and contrast 'Les Sylphides' by Louis Macneice written after and 'Sonnet ' by William Shakespeare written before I am comparing these two poems as the poets have very different opinions on true love. Shakespeare believes that true love will never end even after life while Macneice thinks that after marriage people grow apart because of everyday life.

The two poems were written in different centuries so this could be why their opinion on love differs. The poem presents the 'life in a day'. The man who poet is writing about sees his whole The Seduction and Cousin Kate was written in the 20th Century. The two poems talk about the consequences of being seduced. In Cousin Kate, It is about a young cottage maiden who falls pregnant by a man who is the 'Lord of the manor'. And then whilst the maiden is pregnant the man plans to marry the girls cousin who is Kate. The male in the first poem thinks of her as a joke.

He is willing to seduce the girl and then dump her. He is making her drink alcohol and then the more she drinks, the more attracted Many poets, conventional and traditional have written about their personal feelings and their views on the world. Each poet has a different way of demonstrating the themes through use of language, style and tone; but we can still establish the related themes. Some examples of the related themes are melancholy about their lives, relationships with others, and an aspiration for isolation, perception of oblivion and their Both poems "Remember" and "My Last Duchess" seek to convey a view of love.

However they are different, to an extent it is the reader who may wonder if the writers are writing about the same thing. Love is always thought of as selfless and pure. In the first poem "Remember" it is about how she wants to be remembered and at this time her lover is alive, whilst in the other poem the lover is dead and he The poems share similar language and imagery mainly about love but vary in structure. The poems allow the reader to see Clare's experience as he has lost his heart and Shakespeare's emphasis that his love's beauty is immortal.

The two poems both comprise of love and physical relationships and are both written in the first person to portray a personal view intended for the reader to see the effects of being in love and how you Metaphysical poetry was type of poetry that was very popular during 17th century. Metaphysical actually comes from the Greek words Meta and physical. Meta meaning beyond or after and physical meaning physical.

The poets wrote in contrast to the highly stylized Elizabethan Lyric poetry written by poets such as Shakespeare, Spencer and Wyatt. This poetry was quite traditional in terms of subject e. In contrast metaphysical poetry was quite rough in terms of sound and rhythm. Metaphysical poetry comprises several literacy devices such as conceits, and an Seamus Heaney's poems, 'Digging' and 'Follower' portray to us the strong relationship between the father and son, as Heaney tends to look up to the elders in his family. Both poems create that pastoral type of atmosphere with the title, 'Digging' suggesting to us digging into the past.

The poems suggest the perfection of Heaney's father at manual labour, introducing someone for Heaney to look up to and admire. The poem 'Follower' illustrates to us the strength and skill, which He uses several words and phrases in verse 1 to convey the virtual state of shock that he is in.

Some of these are: 'I ne'er was struck This quote directly relates to the title of the poem. It denotes that he had never been in love before and was caught off-guard. Another is, 'Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower'. Clare mentions flowers in the first and third verse.
